How UK food supplement labels differ from US Supplement Facts
In Great Britain, food supplements are labelled under The Food Supplements (England) Regulations 2003 (with equivalent regulations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Instead of a US-style “Supplement Facts” panel, the label gives the amount of each vitamin, mineral or other substance per portion recommended for daily consumption, and vitamins and minerals are also expressed as a percentage of the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) from Annex XIII of retained Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 (reg. 6(3)).
Particulars this generator adds
- The name under which the product is sold: “food supplement”.
- The portion recommended for daily consumption.
- A warning not to exceed the stated recommended daily dose.
- A statement that food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet.
- A statement that the product should be stored out of the reach of young children.
The regulation sets what these statements must convey, not exact wording. Check the wording, and the requirements of the nation where you sell, with a qualified adviser.
Units
UK labels use µg (micrograms). The generator converts your amounts per serving into amounts per daily dose (servings per day × amount per serving) and calculates %NRV against verified NRVs, e.g. vitamin D 5 µg, vitamin C 80 mg, zinc 10 mg.
Allergens
The 14 allergens in Annex II must be emphasised in the ingredients list (Article 21) — the allergen builder in the generator lists them.
