This page explains where the numbers and rules in our tools come from, and what we do when we are not sure.

Regulatory data

  • Every reference value (for example a Daily Value or Nutrient Reference Value) and every labeling rule is stored with the official source it comes from: the regulation, its section, and the authority that publishes it.
  • Values are grouped into rulesets per market and product type. Each ruleset has a version, an effective date, a review date and a status: draft, requires verification, verified or archived.
  • A ruleset is marked verified only after a person has checked each value against the current official text. Verified rulesets are locked; later changes create a new version, so older projects can still be opened with the rules they were made with.
  • If a value has not been verified, the tools show a visible “unverified” marker next to it and the label checker will return Review required rather than a pass.
  • We use official sources only: regulators, official legislation databases and government publications. We do not use other label tools or commercial websites as authorities.

Calculations

Calculations use exact decimal arithmetic rather than floating-point approximations, and rounding is applied as a separate, visible step using the rules of the selected market where those rules have been verified. Details are on How Calculations Work.

Translations

Label text can be produced in several languages. Translation alone does not make a label suitable for a market; translated labels should be reviewed by a qualified person.

Limitations

Requirements depend on the product, its ingredients and claims, its legal category in each market and changes to the law. The tools cannot know everything about your product. See the disclaimer.
