Proprietary blends on Supplement Facts panels
A proprietary blend lets a manufacturer declare the total weight of a group of dietary ingredients without giving each one’s amount. 21 CFR 101.36(c) sets out how the blend is presented.
The rules our generator applies
- Identify the blend with the words “Proprietary Blend” or another appropriately descriptive term or fanciful name.
- Declare the total weight of all dietary ingredients in the blend, next to its name.
- List the components in descending order of predominance by weight, indented beneath the blend name.
- Components that have a Daily Value are still declared individually with their amount and %DV in the nutrient section. They are not hidden inside the blend.
- Botanical components still name the plant part used.
Example
An “Energy Blend 500 mg” containing green tea leaf extract 300 mg, guarana seed extract 150 mg and ginseng root 50 mg is listed in that order. The weights of the three components are not shown, and the %DV column carries “†”.
Checks to run
- The blend total equals the sum of its dietary ingredients. The generator flags a mismatch when you enter component weights for your own records.
- The order matches your formula by weight.
- The components do not include ingredients that belong in the “Other ingredients” statement, such as excipients.
